Overview
During embryonic period the nephrogenic cord gives rise to three sets of excretory organs or the kidneys which develop in a cranial to caudal manner.
The Pronephros - The first set of kidneys, cranial, rudimentary and nonfunctional.
The Mesonephros - The second set of kidneys, well developed, functional for a brief period.
The Metanephros - The third and definitive set of kidneys, highly developed and functional for life.
